Character History

Education

Early Life

Born in a village called Condar, his younger years were relatively uneventful.

The Dominion War

He was nine when the Dominion War began. Like many Betazoid families, they didn’t expect anything to happen on the planet due to its proximity to the core of the Federation.

Then, in 2347, the unthinkable happened. The Tenth Fleet, responsible for Betazed and the surrounding colonies, was on a training exercise when the Dominion launched a surprise attack on Betazed. What began in the early morning was over within ten hours. Many major cities, including the capital city of Rixx, were heavily damaged in the assault.

Smaller cities like Condar were not as severely damaged but were still occupied. Fortunately for Kiran and his family, Condar was close to the Loneel Mountains. These mountains were originally very active volcanoes, though they had been dormant for many centuries. The volcanic activity created tunnels and caves throughout, which had high concentrations of the sensor-blocking mineral, fistrium.

There were government-constructed emergency shelters within these mountains, and many evacuees were taken here to protect them from the Dominion. The shelters held around 1,500 people, and Kiran and his parents were some of the lucky ones able to make it to the area due to their close proximity to Condar.

While they were there, Starfleet officers who were either trapped when the Dominion invaded or were simply on the planet at the wrong time sometimes visited. One such officer was a doctor who came into the camp to help the sick and wounded. Though the shelter held 1,500 people, often, as soon as someone was able to go back out into the occupied cities, they would swap out with any injured or sick people.

Towards the end of the occupation, Kiran and other children in the camp contracted Rigelian Fever due to the insects within the caves. During this time, the Betazoid Resistance raided a hospital in his old home city for ryetalyn, the only known cure for the illness. Although the hospital had been destroyed by the Dominion and had no ryetalyn, some visiting Starfleet officers had brought some with them. One of these officers, a doctor, was there to help administer it. While there was not enough for everyone, a Starfleet lieutenant was able to give a dose to Kiran. This doctor made everything feel better, cementing in Kiran’s mind that he wanted to join Starfleet when he was able to.

Starfleet Career

When he was 18, he applied and was accepted to Starfleet Academy. He attended on Earth. During his third year, when he was a Cadet Junior Grade, another unthinkable tragedy happened, the attack on Mars. It was only six months into this third year, and Starfleet Academy suspended all classes. Fortunately for Kiran, this was only for around a month, and he was able to continue his Starfleet training. Because of the shortage of manpower, and the loss of the Utopia Planitia Fleet Yards, for the remainder of his third year, and his final year as a cadet, he was assigned to the San Francisco Fleet Yards, where he would go on to become a warp field specialist.
