Class Description
The Danube class was first commissioned by Starfleet in 2368 for use as a light, multipurpose craft in situations that demanded a more capable vessel than a standard shuttlecraft, but lower mission profile than a full sized starship. With this flexibility, the Danube Class can easily be utilized as a long range personnel and cargo transport, an agile mobile defense platform, or even a high speed reconnaissance vehicle.
The Danube's true innovation is it’s compact, high performance propulsion system. She is designed to have a maximum speed of Warp 5. The Danube is equipped with an aft tractor beam capable of towing a vessel at least as large as a Galor Class Cruiser. For defense, the runabout is armed with phaser banks, and photon torpedoes. The hull is made up of a metallic alloy that can interact with magnetic fields. This unique hull alloy was designed so that lost ships could be more easily detected with something as simple as a differential magnetometer. In case of low power, the Danube has a contingency fuel cell to provide an additional emergency supply of power.
In its first two years of operational service, the runabout remained the primary method of transport and defense support for most stations. The Danube class was instrumental in discovering many new worlds and civilizations within the Gamma Quadrant, as well as the discovery of the Bajoran Wormhole itself.
Ideally, the Danube class is piloted by two crewmembers, although one can suffice. The cockpit of the Danube has stations for up to four crewmembers. Small square viewscreens mounted within the forward corners of the cabin are used as communications displays as well as Master Systems Displays.
The Danube class’ mission profile requires her to be largely customizable, and as such any of various interior “modules” can be outfitted to the runabout. Some examples include science laboratories, crew quarters for extended away missions, and photon/quantum torpedo bays. Along with the modules the a Danube class runabout can be equipped with a roll bar to carry mission specific equipment. The Danube was designed to be one of the more versatile small craft in the Federation Fleet, and as such she will likely be in service for a long time to come.
